Struggling to Write an Accountant Job Description? Start Here (+ Free Templates)

Finances are critical to any organization. (We probably don’t need to tell you that, right?) But to say that they’re difficult to manage would be an understatement.

It’s no surprise then that accountant jobs are both important and extremely difficult to fill.

Having a hard time finding the perfect person for this hot job?

Then you need a job description that catches the eye of top-tier talent — talent that can balance the books and stand the test of time in your organization.

Do you need to worry about job descriptions?

In a word? Absolutely.

Job descriptions are crucial.

Just like a press release, a report, or an event, job descriptions are an extension of your company. And you want to make a good first impression to everyone who scrolls by, right? (Of course you do!)

They also give you an opportunity to clarify exactly what you’re looking for in a candidate, saving both you and underqualified applicants lots of time.

To sum up — you need job descriptions. And it’s in your best interest to publish a strong one that paints a vivid picture of your company’s culture.

But, as important as they are, who has time to write and rewrite job descriptions all day?

That goes double for hot jobs you’re always looking to fill.

And considering how important — and stressful — the role of an accountant can be, this is definitely one of those jobs.

What should an accountant job description include?

No matter the position, all the standard information needs to be mentioned. That includes:

  • Basic information about the role: That includes essential information like job title, salary or pay range, who this individual would report to, hours or shifts, and any overtime or weekend work.
  • Responsibilities of the job: Start by giving the key objective of the role. Then list the general responsibilities and descriptions of key tasks. (Try not to list every little thing they’ll be doing in the role. Stick to the tasks that will comprise 95 percent of their day-to-day.)
  • Qualifications: That means the education, experience, training, and technical skills necessary for entry into this job.
  • Special demands: List any extraordinary conditions applicable to the job (for example, heavy lifting, exposure to temperature extremes, prolonged standing, or travel).

Next, get into the role-specific details. In the case of an accountant, that might include:

  • Any industry-specific experience that would make their transition into the role smoother
  • Proficiencies with any software, like QuickBooks
  • Managing confidential financial information
  • General skills every accountant needs to have, like:
    • Reporting and data entry skills
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Knowledge of the standard of financial accounting standards (SFAS)
    • Excellent time management

Now that you have an idea of what should go into an accountant’s job description, here are two free templates to get you started!

I’ve included a formal and an informal option — make sure you customize it depending on your company culture!
